Installing Mekuru

Install Mekuru from Google Play on Android, or join the TestFlight beta on iPhone and iPad.

On Android

Google Play

  1. Open Mekuru on Google Play.
  2. Tap Install.

Beta testing

Beta testers get new versions of Mekuru before everyone else.

  1. Join the mekuru-testing-group Google Group.
  2. Open the Google Play testing page and join the test.
  3. Install or update Mekuru from that page.

APK from GitHub

You can also install Mekuru without Google Play.

  1. Open the latest GitHub release.
  2. Download app-play-release.apk.
  3. Open the file on your phone. Android may ask you to allow installs from that app first.

Each release also has app-parallel-release.apk. It installs as a separate app called Mekuru Parallel, with its own library and settings. Use it to try a new version without touching your books.

On iPhone and iPad

Mekuru is coming to the App Store. Until then, you can install the beta through TestFlight, Apple's app for testing new apps. You need iOS 26 or iPadOS 26, or newer.

  1. Install TestFlight from the App Store.
  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open the invite link: testflight.apple.com/join/3HegxezW.
  3. Follow the steps in TestFlight to install Mekuru.

The beta can have rough edges. Please report problems with You › Settings › Send Feedback.

First launch

Mekuru opens on the Library tab. Your library is empty and shows these buttons:

  • Import EPUB and Import Manga add your own files. See Importing Books and Importing Manga.
  • Get Dictionaries installs the starter pack. Do this first, so you can look up words. See Setting Up Dictionaries.
  • Restore Backup brings back your data from a Mekuru backup, for example one made on your old phone. See Backup & Restore.
  • Browse free books opens a catalog of free Japanese books. See Free Books.

You don't need an account.

Mekuru uses your phone's language when it is English, Spanish, Indonesian or Simplified Chinese, and English otherwise. To change it, open You › Settings › App Language.
